Pleated Mesh Screens: A Guide for Doors and Windows
Wide openings have always been a problem for insect screens. A sliding door three metres across leaves you with a heavy frame that rattles in its track or a roller screen with a spring that gives out after a couple of summers. Pleated mesh takes a different approach. Instead of rolling the fabric onto a drum, it folds it like a concertina and parks it at the side of the opening.
What Pleated Mesh Actually Is
Pleated mesh is a fine screen fabric that has been permanently creased into accordion folds. Thin cords run through the folds at regular intervals, holding the shape and keeping the pleats from sagging or bunching. When you pull the leading bar across, the folds open out into a flat screen. Push it back and the whole thing collapses into a stack only a few centimetres deep.
The fabric itself is usually polyester or fibreglass coated in PVC. Polyester holds a crease better and springs back after someone walks into it, which is why most systems use it.
How the System Works
The Track
A slim bottom track guides the leading bar. Good systems use a low-profile track, around 5 to 11 mm high, so it isn't a trip hazard and a wheelchair or trolley can cross it. Cheaper versions use a deeper channel that collects dust and grit.
The Cords
The tensioning cords are what separate a screen that lasts from one that sags within a year. They should be UV-stable and run through every pleat, not every second or third one. If the cords stretch, the pleats splay and the screen starts to drag.
The Frame
Most pleated screens sit in an aluminium frame that mounts to the face or the reveal of the opening. Powder-coated finishes hold up better outdoors than anodised ones in coastal air.
Where It Works Well
Pleated mesh suits openings that ordinary screens struggle with. Bi-fold and sliding doors are the obvious case, because a pleated screen can span four metres or more without needing a centre post. It also works on large casement windows, balcony doors, verandah openings, and awkward shapes where a rigid frame would look wrong.
Plenty of people fit them in rentals too, since face-mounted systems can be removed and the holes filled without much trouble.
The Advantages
It takes up almost no space. A retracted screen sits flush against the door jamb and reads as part of the frame rather than an addition to it.
It stops anywhere. Unlike a spring-loaded roller, a pleated screen holds its position wherever you leave it. You can open a third of the doorway and leave it there.
The view stays clear. The mesh is fine enough to keep out mosquitoes and flies while letting light and air through, and the pleats sit close enough together that the eye reads them as a soft texture rather than a barrier.
No spring to fail. There's no tensioned drum inside the housing, so the most common failure point on roller screens simply isn't there.
Choosing One
Check the mesh density first. Standard insect mesh keeps out flies and mosquitoes. If you're dealing with sandflies, midges, or thrips, ask for a finer weave and accept that airflow drops slightly.
Then look at the track height, the cord spacing, the warranty length, and whether the manufacturer sells replacement mesh. A system you can remesh in five years is worth more than one you have to throw away.
Measure the opening at three points across and three points down, and use the smallest figure. Old houses are rarely square.
Installation and Upkeep
Most single-door kits are a genuine DIY job and take an hour with a drill and a level. Wide bi-fold systems are better left to an installer, because the track has to be dead straight or the screen binds.
Maintenance comes down to keeping the bottom track clear. Vacuum it monthly, wash the mesh twice a year with mild soapy water, and don't force the screen if it catches. Something is in the track, and forcing it is how cords snap.
